MLK Day at Tucker Rec, 2018

Tucker Turns Out for MLK Day of Service

To say the first Friends of Tucker Rec Center workday held in coordination with the Tucker Parks & Recreation department was a rousing success is an understatement. Not only did the citizens of Tucker turn out in droves, we accomplished way more than we ever dreamed possible today. The Friends of Tucker Rec and members of the City staff were absolutely thrilled by the sheer volume of volunteers that choose Tucker Rec as their day of service project in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

No one expected we would need more than 24 roller covers or 20 brushes but we did. No one expected us to go through our initial purchase of 8 gallons of paint in just one hour but we did. No one expected us to go through an additional 8 gallons of paint and complete the painting of an entire additional wing of the building but we did.

We owe a tremendous amount of thanks to our new Tucker Parks & Recreation staff and leaders that prepped and primed the areas to be painted in just their first week on the job. We’d like to offer our gratitude to CH2M for their continued support of our community with their generous donation of supplies and refreshments for our workday and we’d be remiss if we did not also thank Tucker City Council members Anne Lerner, Noelle Monferdini, Matt Robbins, and Michelle Penkava for giving so freely of their time for our project.

Most importantly, we’d like to thank all our amazing community members who turned out again in honor of the life of Dr. King. Your contributions today helped tremendously as we continue to work toward making Tucker Rec a place every citizen of Tucker will be able to enjoy for years to come. We had over 100 volunteers walk through our doors today and you blew us away with your tremendous support!

Make A Difference Day

We'd like to thank the dedicated volunteers who despite the threat of rain came out Saturday morning on 'Make A Difference Day' to make our workday a success. We'd also like to thank Chick-fil-A at Tucker Station for a warm breakfast on a chilly morning. .

Make A Difference Day is one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide. Volunteers from around the nation come together with a common mission: to improve the lives of others and their communities. It is held annually on the fourth Saturday every October. Make A Difference Day shows that anyone, no matter of age or background, can make an impact on their community.

On this day, in Tucker, the Friends of Tucker Rec and the Tucker Orchard Guild recognize Beth, Ray, Valerie, Mike, Pat, Reggie, Danyelle and Dede (not pictured) for making a difference at Tucker Rec. Kudos!

Flowers are Blooming at Tucker Rec

We’d like to extend a tremendous thanks to Master Gardner Linda Alley for the beautiful new plantings in our five entrance containers. She donated both the plants and her time to install them to enhance the Rec Center for all of us. Linda is also working to on a new project funded by Park Pride and DeKalb County that will involve the installation of an  ADA compliant path for the Tucker Butterfly Garden and educational signage. Thank you Linda!!

Inaugural Earth Day Workday

Every donation matters, be it time or money, when it comes to support of our local parks. Thanks to generous contributions made by the Home Depot in Tucker and also Tucker city council member Anne Lerner in support of our inaugural Earth Day workday, the Friends of Tucker Rec was able to secure the needed supplies for our event.

Thanks to the hard work of volunteers in addition to some new board members, we were able to clean and refresh the corner beds by the main entrance and also the area in front of the mural.

We hope you will consider joining us for our next workday as we prepare Tucker Rec Center as the site for the 125th anniversary celebration of our community to be held on June 24th.

Again, on behalf of the Friends of Tucker Rec – we thank you all for your support!

Team Tucker Strikes Again!

You did it Tucker! Thanks to your amazing outpouring of support on this National Day of Service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we set a new record with over 60 volunteers at the center today! You not only totally transformed the new reading nook but you also pitched in to paint another much larger room at the center.

You sorted and culled the various books that had accumulated and also donated some great new additions. Thanks to your generosity we received a great love seat and ottoman and the cutest kid sized table and chairs plus rugs and many other items for use in the reading nook.

We’d like to thank the hard working folks of the Tucker Orchard Guild who worked on their courtyard rejuvenation project and also added additional blueberry bushes and fruit trees.

We’d also like to give a big shout out to the young ladies of Immaculate Heart of Mary Daisy Troop 16432 who donated their time to decorate a ‘Little Library” for use in the courtyard aided by members of Community Art Tucker (C.A.T.).

Finally, we’d like to personally offer our deepest gratitude to Tucker Recreation Center Director William Smith who not only came in today on his holiday to assist us but more importantly works so tirelessly at the Center every single day to make it the wonderful resource it is for our community!

Feel free to tag yourself in the pictures below and also add any you may have taken today in the comments below so we can add them to our album.

It was a great day, we accomplished a lot and it was a truly fantastic way to honor the legacy of Dr. King. Thank you again for your support and we hope to see you at Tucker Rec again soon!
